Ukrainian ethnoparks: colors of the national spirit

Ukrainian ethnoparks: colors of the national spirit

How many wonderful, colorful ethnographic museums do we have in our country? Water mills, authentic white huts, sacred ancient churches, rich princely estates - they will help us get acquainted with the life and culture of our great-grandfathers.

The first open-air ethnographic museum was created in Sweden - it was Skansen. Its name began to spread to other similar museums. Let us introduce you to the most colorful open-air museums of Ukraine, which can become a time machine for us and take us back to the lives of our ancestors.

Museum "Pyrogovo"

Within the boundaries of Kyiv, there is the largest ethnopark in all of Europe.

Its area is 130 hectares, and it houses over 300 exhibits: 17th-20th century huts, wooden temples, windmills that occupy an entire field, schools, and a village council.

Here you can see a completely unique building - a 16th century hut. The museum is also famous for its incredibly rich collection - more than 40 thousand exhibits of national clothing.

The size of the museum and its exhibits allow you to spend a whole day here, admiring the area. You can speed up your movement through the park - for example, rent a bike, or take an electric train, or feel like you are in the past on a horse-drawn carriage. The most important thing is that you wear comfortable shoes.

The cost of visiting is 30 UAH, there are discounts for children. Tours are conducted in different languages, the cost of one tour is 60-140 UAH.

As for finding accommodation, you can easily find a hotel or hostel in the city of Kyiv itself. For example, Svyatoshinsky or Holosiivskyi districts will come in handy.

You can get there by car along the Stolychny highway, to Akademika Zabolotnogo Street. You can get there from the Lybidska metro station - trolleybus number 11, or from the Lukyanivska, Akademmistechko, Druzhba Narodiv stations, from Bessarabsky Market and Sofiivska Square - by minibus.

You can work out your own weekend travel itinerary, even share it with friends later. Or you can use an already developed itinerary ("Secrets of the Pechersk Mansions", for example).

Museum of Architecture and Life, Middle Dnieper Region

This is the oldest museum in Ukraine, located near Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi, it occupies 30 hectares. It is included in the National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve "Pereyaslav". In it you can see neat village huts, water mills, windmills, churches as monuments of antiquity.

A princely hunting lodge, elegant and refined, a forest guard house, a parish school.

There are 13 museums of various themes operating here, where you can hear about the culture, crafts, stories, etc. of Ukrainians.

The park is large, so comfortable shoes will help.

You can visit the park by paying 2-5 UAH for each of the museums, excursions cost 3-10 UAH. You will be grateful for the small change when you pay without giving change.

As for accommodation, you can find shelter in hotels in the city of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi and in the capital.

Park "Kyiv Rus"

An impressive sight – ancient Kyiv of the 5th-13th centuries, scale 1:1 – you can see in the village of Kopachiv, near Kyiv. This stunning complex is “Kyiv Rus”.

There is plenty to do here: explore the princely court and small houses of ordinary people, wander through shops of various crafts and buy souvenirs, visit the living museum of horses, which houses more than 30 breeds of these beautiful animals. The park is located not far away – 45 minutes by car from Kyiv, take the Nova Obukhivska highway. From Kyiv you can get there by shuttle bus from the Vydubychi metro station.

"Ukrainian Village"

Not far from Kyiv, 15 km away, in the village of Buzova, there are a cluster of huts representing six regions of Ukraine: the Middle Slobozhanshchyna, Polissya, the Carpathians, the Dnieper region, and the south of Ukraine. A wooden church is located nearby. This complex is called the "Ukrainian Village".

In some huts, for example, Polissya, you can live for a while, there is an ethno-hotel here, the interior decoration of which is made of old household items. In general, the rooms in the complex are both in folk style, and there is a choice of modern and modern styles.

"Shevchenko Grove"

There is a corner in Lviv where you can enjoy every hour of your stay - where the air is fragrant and the culture is authentic. It is here that wooden and mud-brick houses - remnants of the 16th-19th centuries - are hidden among the trees.

Inside these huts, the interior of that time has been preserved, including household items. The ethnopark "Shevchenko Grove" itself is divided into sectors: Kolomyia, Hutsul, Lemko, etc. Wooden churches, carefully transported to a new place in a disassembled form and carefully assembled, help create the atmosphere.

You can visit the park for 20 UAH, concessionary admission is 10 UAH.

Considering that it is impossible to enjoy the park in one day, we recommend booking a hotel or hostel in Lviv; finding accommodation will not be difficult.

You can get to the park on foot, starting from Lviv's Rynok Square, it will take 40 minutes, you will have to walk no more than 3 km. For those who do not like to walk, there is a tram route 2, 7, 10 or buses - you need the Shevchenko Grove stop.
