Rules for caring for embroidered clothing

Rules for caring for embroidered clothing

It often happens like this: you bought a beautiful embroidered shirt or dress, wore it once or twice, washed it in the washing machine and that's it... the beauty turned into a floor rag (faded, stretched/sagged). To avoid such "surprises", you should follow certain rules.

  • Embroidered items should be washed in lukewarm water (up to 30 degrees) with a liquid detergent for delicate washing that does not contain chlorine or peroxide.
  • When soaking, place the item with the embroidery facing down in slightly warm water with diluted laundry detergent for 15–20 minutes.
  • If you are worried that the threads may fade, add a little salt to the water (if the threads have already faded, take a little bleach, apply it to a cotton swab and carefully rub the stain, without touching the embroidery). You can also add a little vinegar to the water during rinsing (it will fix the color of the threads). Embroidered silk vyshyvankas should not be washed often - this leads to a loss of shine and color of the threads.
  • When washing, the embroidered garment should not be rubbed too much (if necessary, rub with a soft washcloth) and wrung out. If you have a stain on the embroidered garment, we recommend several ways to get rid of it: ink - dip the fabric in milk or soapy water with ammonia, and then carefully rub the stain; blood - rinse the fabric as quickly as possible under cold running water, if the blood does not wash out, you can rub it a little with soap and rinse; greasy stains - rub the stain with ammonia; red wine - rub the stain with sparkling water or white wine.
  • Spread the washed item on a towel and roll it up – this will remove excess moisture. Then carefully lay the embroidered item on a flat surface on a dry towel or sheet/duvet cover (embroidered items should be dried inside out). Do not overdry the item.
  • Embroidered garments should be ironed slightly damp and on the wrong side (embroidery cannot be ironed from the "face"), a soft base should be placed under the embroidered garment (this will keep the embroidery more voluminous). Ironing should be done at a temperature not higher than 200 degrees (items with silk embroidery - at a lower temperature). The ironed item should be left on a hanger - to allow the fibers to take the correct shape.
  • If the embroidery needs to be starched, use a spray-on starch for ironing shirts (this will not only save you time, but also cause less hassle, because you can starch the item directly while ironing).
