Guide to mystical places in Ukraine

Guide to mystical places in Ukraine

Ukrainian folklore is full of mysticism and mysteries. Although there is no Loch Ness Monster or Yeti in it, there are quite a few places with mysterious legends and filled with unusual energy.

A thousand-year Sabbath

The right bank of the Lybida (a river that, unfortunately, is now almost invisible, so little water remains in it) is famous for its Lysa Hora. It is one of the most famous, described in literature and mentioned in folklore, mystical places of the capital of Ukraine, and perhaps of the entire country.

As legends say, the top of the mountain was once a smooth and clean place, where not a blade of grass or a tree grew, and here the witches of Kyiv held their famous coven.

However, this mountain is not only known for witches, its stories make the blood run cold in the veins. For example, one of these legends says that even during the Tatar-Mongol raids, the inhabitants of Kyiv hid under Lysa Mountain in its caves. Having learned about this, Khan Batu ordered to wall up the entrances to the caves, having no other way to deal with the fugitives.

And at the beginning of the 17th century, another story happened, no less sad in its outcome. A fortress was built on Lysia Hora, it had huge underground reservoirs. In case the fortress was captured, a huge amount of Dnieper water could be pumped into them. And so that the construction of the fortification remained unknown to anyone, thousands of people who worked on the construction of the fortress were drowned in the very wells that they had built.

In the 20th century, this mountain added a sad reputation to its name as a place where state criminals were punished. Parents would use its name to scare their children who disobeyed them and misbehaved, people would periodically disappear from the mountain, and those who returned would later go mad.

Times have changed, and the name of Bald Mountain, as before, is shrouded in mystery, deaths and incomprehensible events. Now the most interesting thing on the mountain is its tunnels, there is also a temple where there are wooden idols, an altar, probably a sacrificial one, and long-forgotten stairs leading to the lake.

The Lord's punishment

In Zhytomyr region there is Kam'ane Selo - it is a natural monument and at the same time a geological reserve. It is quite possible that once there was a real village on this place. Legend has it that once, in ancient times, an old man came to this village, and he went into the first of the courtyards to ask for a drink of water, but he was chased away. He was chased away in the second courtyard, and in the third, and so on throughout the village. He wandered around the village for a long time, and none of the villagers suspected that it was the Lord himself who came to them in the form of an old man. He was angered by the indifference and callousness of the local residents, and for their stinginess he sent punishment on all the houses, turning them into stone ones, and along with the houses, all their inhabitants. So the village became stone, and in one place you can even see a footprint of a bare foot on the stone, which is also called the footprint of God. It is said that by placing your hand on this fossilized footprint, you can be cured of all your illnesses.

There is another local legend - about the notorious "devil's mill": once the devils built a mill in this place, and built it at night. But once during the construction they were caught by the crowing of a rooster, which indicates the arrival of dawn and the end of the devil's time. The devils, frightened, abandoned all their work, and the millstones remained and stand here to this day. These are fairy tales or anecdotes, but the place is very famous for its stories and energy, which attracts tourists and visitors.

A fortress shrouded in mystery

In Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Odessa region, there is the Akkerman Fortress, the construction of which took more than 200 years. The fortress is one of the largest and, most importantly, the best-preserved fortifications, but its appeal is not only in this. Many interesting things have happened near these ancient walls for a long time. For example, after World War II, local boys periodically noticed strange horned figures on its crenellated walls. Their origin remained unclear. Sometimes these figures attacked random local residents, but, fortunately, they did not kill them, only took away their food and drink. Some put forward the version that these were mutants - degraded Australopithecus. Others claimed that Romanian soldiers were hiding in the caves in this area, who at one time did not want to be captured.

But how to explain the horns? Supporters of the second version say that they could be mistaken for the cone-shaped silhouette of soldiers' caps. But what if in fact, deep underground, ancestors who chose an unconventional path of development, an alternative evolution, still live there?

A magnet that attracts lightning

This village has a completely official name, reflected on maps and in documents - Kupishche, Zhytomyr region. But the people gave it a more appropriate name, which characterizes what is happening here - Gromovishche.

What's wrong here? In these places there is a clearing that attracts lightning like a magnet. An ancient legend says that in this place there was once a rich landowner's estate. This landowner dealt very cruelly with his serfs who disobeyed or were simply not like them, and his punishments were similar in sophistication to the sadism of the famous Saltychikha. The universe put up with his madness and aggression for a long time, but one day he surpassed himself and tortured a beautiful young girl to death. And in the middle of a clear sky, thunder sounded, lightning flashed, the landowner himself fell dead, his estate burned down in a matter of seconds. From that day on, the place was considered dangerous, no one stayed here for long - after all, every thunderstorm inevitably strikes this very place with lightning.

Local residents claim that a bright beam of light periodically shines from Gromovyshche, piercing the sky and disappearing in the air, and it looks like a powerful searchlight directed from the Gromovyshche clearing. Those people who happened to be here at that time shared their impressions: they felt unwell, their hearts began to beat quickly and strongly. Scientists have given

Gromovysh has the status of an anomalous place that has a geophysical effect, but what is the reason that attracts so many lightning strikes systematically to one place remains a mystery to the scientific world, as before.

So, as we can see, Ukraine is very interesting from a mystical point of view - with its witches, incomprehensible and unsolved mysteries, devils and vampires, and even a separate race of underground people.
