Carpathian corners worth seeing with your own eyes, or an autumn trip to the mountains

Carpathian corners worth seeing with your own eyes, or an autumn trip to the mountains

There are places whose beauty is most advantageously highlighted by the golden glow of autumn leaves. This framing gives them a fairy-tale and unsurpassed mystery. You feel that a mystery is walking somewhere nearby, but you can’t catch up with it and solve it. The Carpathians are such a magical place. Places that amaze with their nature and amazing structures, places where you can enjoy the beauty and unity with nature. So we invite you on a journey.

Nature

The amazing views of the Carpathians are worth seeing in the golden robes of autumn. So dress warmly, take raincoats, tents and other gear and head to the mountains (especially when there is a long weekend on the occasion of the men's holiday - Defender of Ukraine Day, October 14).

Lake Synevyr

This is the largest and most mysterious lake in Ukraine (which is worth the legend of the young man Vyr and the girl Sin, whose story is in no way inferior to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"). It is located among the rocks and forests of the Inner Gorgany mountain range, on the territory of the national natural park of the same name. Morske Oko of the Carpathians is located at an altitude of about 1000 m above sea level, the maximum depth is 24 m. The lake impresses with its purity and beauty at all times of the year, and its special beauty is given by the trees dressed in autumn clothes, which are reflected in the smooth stretch of Morske Oko with the golden-red flame of autumn.

Shypit Waterfall

This turbulent stream of water is hidden on the northern slopes of the Borzhava valley. You can get here from the village of Pylypets, the villages of Verkhniy and Nyzhniy Studeny, or from numerous sanatoriums located nearby. The waterfall is beautiful at any time of the year: in spring, when the snow melts and the turbulent stream carries water from the mountains, in summer, when the water mist gives coolness and freshness, and in autumn, when the water turns golden from the leaves. You can approach the waterfall from above or below - the landscape is equally attractive. You also have the opportunity to wander along the picturesque slopes.

Hook Waterfall

A single-cascade waterfall beauty that is worth seeing in the golden frame of the autumn forest. You will be able to admire the fabulous landscapes of the Gorgany Mountains, the rapid flow of the Zhenets River and the majestic spruces that hold up the sky. The Zhenets Waterfall is quite young. It was formed as a result of a flood in the post-war years. The stream falls from a height of 15 m. In the spring, when water descends from the mountains, and in the fall, after prolonged rains, the waterfall also forms many small waterfalls. For visitors, there are recreation areas under the waterfall and wooden bridges over the stream.

Kamianets Waterfall

If you want to easily find this waterfall, follow the sound, and you are guaranteed not to miss it. The waterfall falls from a height of 6 m and is an unrivaled sight at full flow. The nearest settlement is the village of Skole, from which a marked route to the waterfall has been laid. This is a good option for lovers of long journeys and unity with nature (a two-hour leisurely walk through picturesque places with unrivaled nature and views). On the way to the waterfall, you can also visit the Dead Lake. It has such a high hydrogen sulfide content that fish are not found there. The island of intertwined roots and moss floating in the middle of the lake gives this place its mysticism.

Lake Hereshaska and Dragobrat Waterfall

Not far from the Dragobrat ski resort is the Dragobrat cascade waterfall. Together with Lake Gereshaska, located above, it forms a natural ensemble that amazes with its beauty. You can get here on foot from the Dragobrat ski resort. A 2-hour pleasant walk awaits you past Mount Stig in the direction of the Apshinets peak. The climb to the waterfall is quite difficult, but the beauty that you will see from a height of 1500 m is worth it. And, having risen 80 meters higher, you will see Lake Gereshaska, the water in which does not warm up above 11 degrees even in the hottest weather.

Castles and palaces

And lovers of historical places will be interested in the Carpathian castles, shrouded in mysteries and legends. We will tell you about the 3 most famous of them.

Schönborn Palace

Once it was the residence and hunting lodge of the family of Count Schönborn. Built in the neo-romantic style, it still amazes with its beauty and mystery. The palace was built according to the astronomical principle: there are 365 windows (another window is bricked up - in case of a leap year), 52 chimneys, 12 entrances, and 4 towers at the corners of the castle. The building is decorated with stained glass windows and bas-reliefs with the symbols of the Schönborn family. In the post-war period, the Karpaty sanatorium was opened here, which still hospitably welcomes vacationers. The park near the palace deserves special attention: here you can wander for hours among the trees, listen to the silence and admire the mountain views.

Palanok Castle

The castle towers over the city and seems to still protect it from enemies. It was built on a mountain (there is a legend that the mountain, both man-made and the people who built it, suffered greatly, which is why the city was named Mukachevo). To get to the castle, you need to overcome the path to the castle gate and cross the bridge over a deep moat. In Palanok, you can either explore everything on your own or book a 2-hour excursion, during which you will be shown the life of the fortress, told legends and historical facts about Palanok, which are very often even more incredible than fiction - the choice is yours. For cold and tired travelers, there are coffee shops on the territory where you can drink a cup of delicious coffee and enjoy the unique flavor of Carpathian pubs.

Uzhhorod Castle

Many legends are associated with it, the most famous of which is about the White Maiden - the sad ghost of a young noblewoman who was walled up alive in the fortress wall for treason. They say that she often wanders the castle corridors and looks for her lover. Once upon a time, people hid in the walls of the Uzhhorod Castle during wars and raids, and now a local history museum has been opened on its territory, where everyone can get acquainted with the history and life of Transcarpathia. But the pearl of the museum is the fortress building itself, built on a steep slope. The castle is not distinguished by beauty or elegance - it is a real defensive stronghold without lacework and fragile bas-reliefs, but its strict beauty seems to transport you to the times of chivalry and honor.

Of course, there are many more beautiful places and places in the Carpathians that are worth visiting and seeing with your own eyes. However, in our opinion, this list can be a good start for getting to know this amazing region.
