Some places that we walk through and do not suspect anything actually remember the steps of famous actors. And we do not even guess what talents were here before us. But that is exactly how it is, familiar places sometimes become the scene where iconic cinematic events take place, and they can be located in any corner of our country. For example, Odesa has become a favorite of Hollywood directors. Among them is the film "The Carrier", episodes from which were shot near the Black Sea, in Perlyna. And our bright Poltava sunflowers have become wonderful scenery for film frames with the unsurpassed Sophia Loren.
"D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers": Paris in the Heart of the City of Lions
The famous film "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers", created back in the days of the USSR, forever imprinted in the film the palaces located in Western Ukraine. The very first frames show us the magnificent landscapes of Galicia. The ancestral nest of D'Artagnan in Ukrainian traditions is the Svirz Castle, which is shown in the film repeatedly. It is also the place where the king rested on a picnic with his retinue.
Lviv residents easily recognize the Potocki Palace, famous for its luxury, in the residence of Captain De Treville. The Descho Monastery hid behind the walls of the Armenian Cathedral, in one of the Lviv courtyards, musketeers defended their honor in a duel. The Lviv House of Scientists became the place where Cardinal Richelieu first met the famous Gascon. Buckingham's residence was located in the famous Oles Castle. And Pidhorytsky Castle hosted a ball for the heroes, at which the queen had to show the king the pendants, his gift.
The beautiful scenery against which the Marlezon Ballet was performed is actually located within the walls of the Odessa Opera House. And many more paintings of Odessa's landscapes and interiors are hidden among Hollywood films.
But the siege of La Rochelle did not take place in Odessa – here the Khotyn fortress, located in the Chernivtsi region, comes to the fore.
Sophia Loren and the farm near Dikanka - do they have anything in common?
A beauty in film and in life, a role model and example for many women, Sophia Loren visited the Poltava region in 1969: our wonderful Ukrainian sunflower fields were needed for the filming of the film "Sunflowers". Residents of the village of Chernechy Yar (Dykansky district) still remember how guests from Italy lived for several days in a trailer installed near the local mill. As a farewell after the filming, Sophia Loren gave sweets and candies to the children of local residents, and one of the residents of this small village received a crepe de chine scarf in memory of those strange times.
"Old robbers" on the streets of old Lviv
The comedy "Old Men Robbers", known to all film lovers, was created right here, on the streets of Lviv. Here, unusual "criminals" Yuriy Nikulin and Yevhen Yevstigneev committed their robbery of the century. Fleeing from his pursuers, Yuriy Nikulin fled through the streets of Lviv. The city can be recognized almost immediately, from the first frames of the film. Famous places in Lviv became the scene for filming: Rynok Square, which we see from different angles, the Powder Tower, many neighboring streets. Many other no less famous sights of beautiful old Lviv.
"War and Peace" in stills
If you take a tour of Transcarpathia, the guides will definitely tell you about the history of the old years, more than 50 years ago, about the famous great battles - Austerlitz and Shengraben, which affected the local lands. Sergei Bondarchuk's film, which won an Oscar, was filmed in the village of Kushtanovitsa, Mukachevo district and became a very big event. More than 150 wagons of various equipment arrived here from Mosfilm itself to the local set, and thousands of newly appeared "soldiers" took part in the battle scenes.
Queen of the gas station in Pyriatyn
When deciding where to shoot this film, we thought for a long time, searched all over the country, but there was still no gas station that would reflect the character of the picture. When we decided on a location – Pyriatyn – it turned out that we couldn’t film at the gas station itself, because it had its own plans and deadlines. And in general, there was a question of fire safety. So we had to build a decorative gas station, not a real one. But it was so similar to the real one that one day the driver of the car stopped and tried to refuel his vehicle. Rumyantseva, who was mistaken for a real local worker, was not at a loss and decided to play along and joke. She refused him until he shaved and washed his car. The confused driver poured out all the boiling water on the local “authorities”, who also did not resolve his issue, and then the “policeman”… Everyone seemed to have conspired against him. But the trick was finally revealed, but the driver was not offended and laughed along with everyone. And this scene became one of the episodes of the film later - this is how life affects the script. Now the people of Pyriatyn can see this bus station, and besides, a cafe of the same name was opened next to it, which stands exactly on the same place where the decoration station once stood. By the way, the water tower is visible in the film, which is still a landmark of the city.
"Wedding in Malinovka" and its consequences for real life
In 1966, from May to October, the small village of Khoroshky, in the Poltava region, became Malinovka according to the script. The director of the film really liked the estate of the landowner Shcherbatov, built in 1848. When the film was planned to be shot, the estate was in excellent condition and had been given over to a school.
They didn't want to disrupt the educational process itself, so they built an exactly the same manor house nearby, no further than 100 meters, a complete copy of the real one. Leningrad gave away statues of lions made of reinforced concrete, children ran to watch the filming, avoiding school classes, and villagers in large numbers became temporary actors, filming in mass scenes. Sincere villagers made friends with many of the actors, spent free evenings together, and one romantic couple even appeared, whose story ended in a wedding. A guy from the village graduated from school and had no luck finding a job, so he came every day to watch the filming. It was there that a woman from the group, the driver of the main director, saw him. In the end, he did go to Leningrad with her, found a job at Lenfilm, and there they played a wedding. The history of the estate, which became the scene of the film's events, was not so happy: over time, the estate fell into decline, and thus its glorious days ended.
"Adventures of Electronics": Moscow or Odesa
Everyone knows the famous children's film "The Adventures of Electronics" from childhood. And it turns out that episodes of this film were created in our Odessa. Southern Palmyra immediately catches the eye of residents: Kulikovo Field, Victory Park, "Children's World", the Palace of Sports, etc.
The main character, Syroizhkin, lived in a house on Kanatnaya, not far from the sea. In the film, you can see many more buildings located in Southern Palmyra. However, the main characters themselves were from Moscow: Vova and Yura Torsuyev were selected from many pairs of twins (over 400) who hoped to pass the casting for the main role.
"Striped Flight"
Among the Odessa beaches, one got the opportunity to become famous due to the fact that it became a filming location for the film “Striped Voyage”. It was Arkady Beach. When they were filming scenes with the group “in striped swimsuits”, they had to install a fence in the sea, creating a small bay. And still, a tigress, one of the “actresses”, jumped over it and ended up on a crowded beach. There was a commotion among the people, but one of the employees put out the alarm in time and hit the beast with a tarpaulin glove, thereby calming the possible danger.
"Viy" and the burnt church
"Viy" became one of the first Soviet horror films. The film was so mystical that it caused many incomprehensible events that could not be explained in the language of rationalism and common sense. The actors themselves claimed that the film was associated with incomprehensible events. Natalia Varley, who played the witch, was not even slightly injured when she fell out of a coffin flying in the air. She was saved by the miracle and reaction of the second actor, colleague Leonid Kuravlyov: he managed to catch the girl, saving her from serious possible consequences. And this was not an isolated incident that happened on the set.
The film was shot in several locations. Part of it was in Chernihiv region, it was a reflection of the ancient Cossack St. George's Church, the same one that was built without using a single nail. Part of the picture was also shot in Chernihiv region, in the Yelets Monastery. The fate of another church that found its place in the picture turned out to be quite unfortunate: the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos, located in the village of Horokholyn Lis (Bogorodchansky district), made entirely of wood, burned down completely, without the possibility of restoration. Mystics see this as retribution for the fact that evil spirits appeared in the church. Firefighters, on the other hand, more realistically saw the cause of the fire in problems with the electrical wiring.
"Following two hares": finally Kyiv
St. Andrew's Church provided shelter to the film crew of the film "After Two Hares": Pronya Prokopivna, who was slyly ridiculed by the vile Golokhvastov, never found her happiness there.
Not only the studio pavilions were used for filming, but also the historical part of the glorious capital. Podil, Mikhailivska Square, Kontraktova became the scenery of the film. In some shots you can even see panel high-rise buildings located on the Dnieper slopes, and even boats - and on the street it was 1961. Such is the historical confusion.
"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" against the backdrop of Hutsul beauty
Sergei Parajanov revealed all the magical beauty of this mountainous region in his film. Where else to shoot a film based on the works of Mikhail Kotsiubynsky, if not in the Hutsul region. It became a truly outstanding event for local residents of the nearby villages. The director settled in Verkhovyna, and now a museum of the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" has been created there.
The film was filmed in Kryvorivna. And now you can visit the Hutsul castle, where the relationship of the young Romeo and Juliet of the Hutsul region began and developed.
"Carrier-3": Odesa again
The high-profile blockbuster is closely connected to Ukraine in terms of the script, because the red-haired beauty is the daughter of a Ukrainian minister. She was kidnapped in order to obtain official permission to dispose of toxic waste in our country. The finale of the film was partially filmed in Odessa, so anyone who is even slightly familiar with this glorious city will easily recognize the scenery of the Odessa port.
