Graduation is the first ball in a young girl's life. And although today this concept has been slightly reduced, and the fun party is often far from a classic ceremony, choosing an outfit is still an epochal task and sometimes begins in September of 11th grade.
I hope we're not too late with this selection and will help you finally decide on a dress.
So, what is important to consider when choosing?
- fashion trends;
- features of the figure;
- own comfort;
- venue.
Fashion trends
In recent years, the concept of fashion has become slightly blurred and we are increasingly guided by our own taste and style, rather than by stated clichés. However, there are certain trends for spring 2018.
- Bare shoulders are still at the peak of popularity, so pay attention to dresses with ruffles, flounces and asymmetry in this area. Such models emphasize girlish tenderness, and in the décolleté area you can experiment with jewelry.
- Godet, sheath or mermaid – these are the styles that you should give preference to. Ancient Greek silhouettes are also popular. But corsets and fluffy skirts a la crinoline have long been forgotten. If you really want to stand out and wear something luxurious, choose a beautiful, albeit impractical, dress with a train.
- Asymmetrical cuts are still on the fashionable Olympus, so sharp transitions in skirt length or a one-shoulder dress are the triumphants of spring 2018.
- Traditionally, the most trendy textures for evening events are silk, brocade, velvet, chiffon and lace. Today, dresses that combine several fabrics are at the peak of popularity. For example, a velvet skirt and a guipure bodice decorated with embroidery.
- Decorative elements for prom dresses in 2018 are diverse. First of all, these are floral embroidery or appliqués with a large number of shiny inclusions - threads, rhinestones, beads. As already mentioned, designers are particularly fond of active decor on translucent light fabrics.
- The current colors of this season remain red, burgundy and various metallics. This trio is complemented by powdery, coffee, emerald and lavender shades. However, do not forget that when choosing a color it is important to consider your appearance type and make a choice in favor of what suits you, not the models from the magazine.
- Vulgar or provocative dresses will be inappropriate for young ladies. Excessive transparency, navel-length necklines, or mini-length dresses are all bad choices for a prom night.
Features of the figure
When looking at fashion, don't forget about the features of your figure. For example, if you have full legs or hips, you should prefer a long, flowing dress. Disguise small breasts with ruffles, draperies or a complex color of the bodice, and hide a wide waist with a belt or shapewear.
As you know, there are several generally recognized body types: Hourglass, Pear, Apple, Triangle, and Rectangle. (We talked more about body types here ).
Dresses with a full skirt, a fitted bodice and a cinched waist will look great on an hourglass figure. Pencil skirts and mermaid styles are also particularly good. But shapeless bags are best avoided.
With wide hips, which can boast of the owners of the "pear" figure type, it is worth emphasizing the chest. Bright colors, light top and dark bottom, embroidery with beads or rhinestones on the bodice. Narrow shoulders can be visually expanded with square or V-shaped necklines. Often, the narrow waist of the "pear", of course, should not be ignored.
The apple-shaped figure often resembles an elongated letter “O”. Therefore, the ideal dress for an apple is one that imitates seductive curves and makes its owner slimmer. The emphasis should be shifted to the legs or chest, and a full tummy can be hidden with a wide dark belt. However, you should not force yourself and tighten the figure in a corset or go to the other extreme by pulling on an oversized hoodie. Successful models of a prom dress will be a sheath, a straight silhouette or a slight flare. By the way, various geometric patterns can also fit.
"Triangle" is an inverted "pear". This figure will suit all styles and colors of prom dresses that are designed to widen the hips. Tulip skirt, pleated skirt, pleated, flared sun, etc. And, of course, a dark top and a light bottom.
A rectangle-shaped figure often looks too straight. Therefore, it is necessary to highlight the chest and hips, and visualize the waistline. Prints that make the waist look incredibly advantageous on this type of physique. Prom dresses that add volume to the hips are also suitable: tulip, peplum, etc. And the chest, as you already know, can be emphasized with a rich bodice decor.
Your own comfort
“Beautiful languid gaze” is not about generation Z. Therefore, leave corsets and fluffy skirts to the floor for the last century, or for the markets of the 2000s. Remember, “prom” is only called an evening, but in fact, for about 14 hours in a row you have to dance, have dinner, socialize and meet the dawn in the chosen outfit. And it should be comfortable.
Of course, there is an option to buy two different dresses – one for the solemn part, the other for dancing and morning relaxation. But, you must admit, this option is not for everyone. Therefore, the chosen model should be universal.
The dress should fit and you should be comfortable in it. If you spend the entire evening adjusting a sagging strap, stepping on the train, or tugging at your skirt, then this is exactly what will make your prom memorable.
Venue
The fourth important argument when choosing a prom dress is the location for the celebrations.
Today, as an alternative to pompous traditional restaurants, people choose country complexes with gazebos, ponds, etc.; nightclubs; yachts; tents in nature. Agree, the prom dress for these places will differ from the style with a train.
Grassy lawns will stain a long hem, it's logical to twirl in a short stylish dress, and it's easier to change into a swimsuit without untying your corset. If the venue for your graduation is unusual, I recommend starting from the question "What is it customary to wear to visit this place on a less solemn day?" when choosing a dress. And then - complement the image with exclusive decor, accessories, etc.
