Greetings from Bermuda

Greetings from Bermuda

A little background

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, such an element of the wardrobe as shorts did not fit into the concept of a women's costume at all. In those days, women dressed in long dresses. Already without fluffy skirts, but still with a corset as an everyday part of the wardrobe. Gloves, fluffy hats, as a separate form of art, decorated with feathers, stones, flowers and everything the heart desires, umbrellas from the sun - this was the image of a woman. Moreover, shorts were an attribute of the wardrobe exclusively of little boys. Over time, when they grew up, shorts were replaced by trousers, which was a sign of maturity. So this element of the wardrobe was taboo not only for women, but also for men.

Everything ingenious is simple.

Shorts got their name from the Bermuda Islands, where they were brought by the British military. At that time, they were called trousers, and they did not have a proper name. This model was developed specifically so that soldiers could feel comfortable in the hot tropical climate. At the same time, no one canceled practicality. The elongated shorts were made of dense fabric that protected the body from injuries and scratches. At the same time, the loose cut allowed the skin to breathe, and the soldiers did not get tired from the heat.

History of origin

During the war, the island had supply problems. As a result, there was an acute shortage of clothing. This situation was especially embarrassing for the head of a local bank, because his subordinates simply had nothing to wear to work. This is how the idea came to start producing trousers similar to British military trousers. Their design was ideally suited to the above-mentioned hot climate and also ensured savings in the already scarce fabric. They were then produced in two pairs per employee. It was then that the shorts received the now well-known name of Bermuda shorts. By the way, in Bermuda, they are still part of the business suit.

Over time, this part of the wardrobe migrated from the military to ordinary citizens, although today it is still an element of the uniform for sailors of the British Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy.

A place under the sun

Shorts took their niche in the history of women's suits a little later.

In the 1930s, shorts began to be introduced into the wardrobe as an element of clothing for active recreation and sports. They gained wide popularity thanks to tennis. Until then, women played sports in dresses or long trousers.

About a decade later, they were banned altogether. This ban was even reinforced by fines. Shorts were forbidden to be worn by everyone except cyclists. This part of the wardrobe occasionally appeared on pop stars and in cinema, but it never became a full-fledged unit in those days. Wearing them was considered indecent.

Victory over stereotypes

Everything changed in the 60s and 70s. During the hippie wave. Then shorts were, among other things, an element of protest against the stereotypical thinking of society. Later in the 80s, during the disco and party era, they finally became a staple in the wardrobe of young people. There were many cuts, types of materials, textures, designs... in short, complete freedom to realize creative fantasies for clothing designers.

It will be as you decide.

But let's get back to one of the hottest trends this summer - Bermuda shorts.

It is difficult to attribute them to any particular style. But is it necessary? After all, you can mix them with anything and the palette of looks can be endless. From a business suit to a dreamy-gentle look. From a basic look that does not attract attention to a street style look. All that remains is to choose an outfit to suit your mood and you can safely go collect armfuls of compliments.
