Patriotic fashion, which has become a current trend especially in the last few years, has covered various areas of our lives. This includes clothing, jewelry, manicures, and paraphernalia. But there are people who have dared to imprint their love for Ukraine not in temporary things, but for their whole lives. We are talking, as you probably already guessed, about tattoos.
There have always been those who, when getting a tattoo, chose drawings related to Ukrainian themes. But after the Revolution of Dignity, the annexation of Crimea, and especially with the beginning of hostilities in the east of our country, such tattoos began to be ordered much more often, they became fashionable. Tattoos became a kind of way to show your patriotism.
A little history
Tattoos have a history that goes back several millennia. In ancient times, they carried social functions (indicating a person's status), were a kind of substitute for a modern passport, helped disguise themselves while hunting, were used as amulets or talismans, and had magical and even mystical significance.
With the spread of Christianity, which was against applying any drawings to the body, considering it a relic of paganism, this type of art practically ceased to exist. Tattoos were used only to brand criminals and women of easy virtue (remember the heroine of the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas "The Three Musketeers"). It was revived only at the end of the 18th century as a symbol that emphasized a person's relationship to a particular group. It was a kind of challenge to society.
In the mid-1950s, tattoos became popular among rock musicians and their fans, and in the 1960s and 1970s, body art was done by people who identified themselves with the hippie subculture.
Today, tattoos have become part of mass culture. The fashion for tattoos has turned this, not so long ago a criminal sign, into a real art. Drawings of various sizes, shapes and colors are applied to the body. Tattoos have become so beautiful and stylish that they are not only not hidden under clothes, but on the contrary, they are demonstrated in every possible way.
What tattoos are most popular today?
Most often, patriotic tattoos are made by young boys and girls, although there are also many admirers among people of more respectable age. They prefer drawings that symbolize something eternal and precious, are unchanging, and their attitude to them will not be affected by time or their own age. Most often, they apply patterns on their bodies depicting a trident, a national flag, Cossacks, beautiful Ukrainian girls, or a Kobzar.
They are very fond of tattoos in the form of Ukrainian embroidery in red, black or blue colors, which looks almost as beautiful as the real thing. There are also tattoos in the form of a map of Ukraine or paintings by Ukrainian artists.
Sometimes they order paintings in the Ukrainian style based on their own sketches – a field, a horse, a Cossack with sabers, etc.
They also place pro-Ukrainian statements, quotes, catchphrases, poems by Shevchenko, or lines from favorite Ukrainian songs, for example, by the Okean Elzy group. All these tattoos are made in an interesting form, often stylized.
After the return to the screens of famous cartoon favorites from the legendary animated series "About the Cossacks", these characters also experienced a new wave of popularity, but now in the form of tattoos.
The most common places to get a patriotic tattoo are on the shoulders or arms. The more daring get tattoos on the legs, neck, stomach, and back.
Tattoos that military personnel get
Patriotic drawings are very often applied to their bodies by servicemen, especially before going to a combat zone. And our courageous defenders are not at all frightened by stories about the special cruelty of militants towards the wearers of such patterns. They consider them a kind of amulet and hope for their protection.
The fighters prefer something simple, small and concise – the already traditional coat of arms, flag and Cossack Mamai, as well as the inscriptions: “Glory to Ukraine!” or “Glory to the nation! Death to the enemies!”.
Fighters most often get tattoos on their arms from the wrist to the elbow; their shoulders and chest are decorated less often.
Some servicemen get tattoos after they return from the ATO, in memory, so to speak, of the times when they defended their State, of what they had to go through, of the guys they served with. Therefore, very often after returning, they tattoo themselves with the emblems of the units in which they served.
Everyone has their own attitude towards tattoos. Some people cover their entire body with drawings, others admire the beautiful work on the bodies of acquaintances or friends, and some do not accept it at all. Whether to get a tattoo or not is a deeply personal matter, because a tattoo remains for life.
However, if you have already decided to get one, then let it be a patriotic tattoo, because it is a kind of accessory that carries information not only about its owner, but also about his thoughts and attitude towards his invincible state and its indomitable people.
